"I was at the bar before the show, when the stranger by my side inquired about who was performing. My reply was that it's a Hendrix tribute band, and that the guitarist was the next coming of Jimi.

Little Big Thing

Thursday
October 29

An original rock and roll jam band based out of the Philadelphia area. Formed in December of 1997, this five piece band (Jason White, Carl Strahl, Mick Swan, Kris Williams and Alan Biehn) has steadily grown into a solid unit as musicians, songwriters and performers. Little Big Thing is a difficult band to pigeonhole. Their original songs offer a unique blend of classic rock, freeform jams, psychedelic excursions, driving hard rock, and an obvious affinity for pop hooks. Their distinctive double guitar style and three part harmony vocals over a driving rhythm section gives LBT a sound that is truly unique.

In true Rock and Roll style, Little Big Thing's live show has grown over the years into an always changing and entertaining spectacle. From a full fledged light show ran by LBT's own light designer Erik Zinger to the band's ability to play without a set list. Mixing great catchy originals and covers Little Big Thing always puts on a live show that leaves people coming back time and time again.

The johnclarenceband is a collection of musicians that blend their talents to create something special performing the latest collection of songs by John Clarence.

The States @ 9:30 pm
The States's razor-edged rock has the uncanny ability to evoke Radiohead-like dreamscapes, Zeppelin-inspired bombast, and an Orwellian political sensibility...often in the same song. The band's inventive songwriting has earned accolades from the John Lennon Songwriting Contest (Grand Prize Winners) and the International Songwriting Contest (Winners), and it has been featured on MTV's "The Hills" and "The Real World," and ESPN's "Baseball Tonight." Moody, melodic rock along the lines of The Cure and The Smiths describes the sound of the music. Thoughtful, catchy lyrics, layers of melodic guitar weaving with orchestral synthesizers, well crafted songs, and pop-sensibility is the outline for Metropolis? sound. ?We want to make a connection through The Hospital for Regrets and Dreams,? states Cristian, ?this is evident in the mood created by the music, and the emotionally charged lyrics we write.? Spots from the Sunlight and The Fall touch on the big subjects of hope and loss, while In All Honesty, Lovelorn and the albums first single Let?s Do It Vanilla keep the mood bright singing about new relationships and their fruits.

Harper Simon

Friday
November 6

With a steel guitar and a microphone
I hope that you will find your way
Someday you’ll find out who you are
Someday you’ll be more than just a shooting star
- “Shooting Star” by Harper Simon

Harper Simon is the work of an exceptionally gifted singer-songwriter and guitarist who’s clearly discovered who he is and found his own way as a recording artist in a time when the very concept of recording an album seems threatened.

For Harper Simon, the opportunity to make his own album here was a matter of no small consequence. “The long playing album is the great artistic medium invented in the second half of the 20th century,” says Simon. “The long playing album is not just ten songs thrown together randomly. It has an arc. It has a structure. It is the attempt to make ten songs that are all as good as each other, and fit together in a seamless whole…”

The Harper Simon that emerges here as a significant new artist with talent to burn and a real seriousness of purpose understands full well that “there really are more wishes than stars”.

“I just fell in love with a forty-five (rpm record) been kept alive in a box over 30 years old,” sings 24-year-old Chris Henderson, the front man of the Hartford, CT, band BRONZE RADIO RETURN. This lyric, from their full-length debut album, OLD TIME SPEAKER, begins to paint the picture that enables your understanding of the group and their music.

Like listening to old Bluesmen on your iPod Touch, BRONZE RADIO RETURN is about the juxtaposition of the old and the new. The love for these old records is a mutual feeling shared by the band members, who attribute their sound to the music that came long before their childhoods.

The Once Was
Hailing from Moorestown, New Jersey, The Once Was is an eclectic four-piece indie rock band descending from the creative zealot that is the home recording studio. Collaborating existential lyrical themes with progressive indie-pop rhythms, the band brings an energetic and surprising live show to audiences and enthusiasts alike. Recently the band released their debut full length album "Post War Parade." Based on a shoestring budjet leftover from local gigging, the band independently produced their album at Studio 4 in Philadelphia, followed by a cd release at the World Cafe Live.

Sue Steen
Susan Steen, formerly of the pop/rock band OutSet, started her solo career in February 2008. Later that year she released her debut solo album “Start Again” and was nominated for Female Artist of the Year on Delaware’s WSTW 93.7 Hometown Heroes. Susan’s music is from the heart and is very personal. Her songs are about real-life situations in which she is not afraid to reveal her emotions to the listener, all the while creating a melody that will stay with you long after.

Live performances are always energetic and inspiring! Don’t miss this full band show with Brett Talley on bass and John Faye on drums. When Susan is not performing her solo music, you can find her playing bass for the Philadelphia based rock group IKE.

Jacqui Naylor

JD Malone
“Jacqui Naylor is an incomparable triple threat, serving up classic covers with the best of them, delivering top-drawer originals and inspiring with the musical marriage she calls acoustic smashing," wrote JazzTimes. “The words and melody are Gershwin’s ‘Summertime’ but the groove is Allman’s ‘Whipping Post.’ Naylor has the chops and sensitivity to pull it off,” adds The New York Times. “Her whisky-tinged voice can bring to mind a mid-career Peggy Lee,”
sounds the Seattle Times.

The artist has released her seventh recording, You Don’t Know Jacq (Ruby Star/Warner), and tours nationally and internationally,
including acclaimed debuts at Ronnie Scotts London, Blue Note New York, Milan and Tokyo, The Women In Jazz Festival Germany and
World Café Live in Philadelphia. The Wall Street Journal claims "The Color Five and Smashed For The Holidays marked a turning point in
Naylor’s career.” Indeed, her holiday recording placed in the top 10 for the season in USA Today, Jazziz Magazine and The Washington Post.

Naylor’s current release has already garnered much fame, with “Rise Up” featured on the Obama/Biden Website and “Celebrate Early & Often” used in advertising for Columbian Emeralds and Novell Wedding Rings. All Music Guide writes “Part jazz chanteuse and part folk-pop-leaning singer/songwriter, she enjoys nothing more than mixing things up. She could easily get by performing only her own material, but her covers and standards are so appealingly original in their execution that her albums wouldn't be the same without them.”

God Shaped Void

Riverside

The April Skies

Thursday
December 3

God Shaped Void @ 8:30 pm
GOD SHAPED VOID (Gary Billings and David Giuffre) have a long musical history together. They first met in 1996 and co-founded Philadelphia's goth rock sensation Carfax Abbey. In 2001, Dave developed his solo electro industrial project called Brainclaw, and Gary continued to sing with Carfax. As fate would have it, they reunited in Fall of 2008, when David attended one of Gary's solo acoustic guitar performances. Dave recorded produced Gary's solo album, Grey Skies, and are now entrenched in the GOD SHAPED VOID project, writing and producing new songs together again for the first time in almost nine years.

Riverside @ 9:30 pm
Riverside emerged on the Philadelphia music scene in the early nineties with an infectious, dreamy, guitar-pop sound. Their first release, "One", was produced by Steve Lau (The Ocean Blue) and released by Sire/Warner Bros. "One" yielded the hits ‘Waterfall’ and ‘Cinnamon Eyes’ and achieved heavy rotation on modern rock radio and MTV. Original members, Keith and Glenn Kochan have recently re-formed the band with John Larish (guitars) and Tim Simmons (drums). They are currently playing select East Coast shows and recording a new CD for Spring 2010 release.

The April Skies @ 10:30 pm
THE APRIL SKIES have been steadily making music since 1988. They ruled PA back in the early 90’s alongside the big guns like LIVE, THE OCEAN BLUE and SUDDENLY, TAMMY! THE SKIES have the uncanny ability to make music that is at once cuttingly personal, yet capable of filling up every last inch of the world’s biggest stadiums. Crawford spits out lyrics full of equal parts romance and regret that make you feel like you’re secretly paging through his diary; meanwhile, the band’s reverbdrenched guitars and towering keyboard lines are blasting off into the stratosphere. Their newly released CD is featured in the CMJ New Music Report!

“Original blues, soul, rock from Philadelphia ..”a gifted song-writer whose voice is matchless in the ring of sultry blues singers”
Living Blues Magazine

Her most recent effort Grace & Grit was released in September of 2008 and recently debuted in November of 2008 at #16 for The Living Blues Radio Chart.

“ Her powerful, soul-tinged bluesy vocals showcase both an abundance of grace along with more than just a smidgen of grit. On the grace/grit scale, she weighs in heavily alongside the finest female blues belters ever.  In fact, the potent force of her vocals should secure her presence on the national blues scene for years.”

John B. Austin

Thursday
December 10

Easily one of the finest bands out of Pennsylvania the John B. Austin Band performs a tasteful mix of Americana, blues, country, folk and classic rock. A well seasoned group of veteran musicians (all of whom have 30 or more years of experience) these guys are not afraid to let the music take on a life of its own. Whether they're getting down to one of John's well written originals, or stretching out on an old familar classic, the group is becoming known for it's inspired improvisation, extended live jams, and tight 3 part harmonys to boot. John has one solo CD to his credit "Harder When You Run", released in 2000, and this year (2009), has released a new cd, "Live @ Puck" with his current band.Look for a lot more great music from the John B. Austin Band in the years to come.

Dan Bern

Saturday
December 12

“We live in different worlds right along beside each other.”

So sang Dan Bern in one of his early songs. But really we all just live in Dan’s world, and he’s been generous enough to let us believe otherwise all along. Let’s face it: the man has more stray thoughts, makes more obscure and askant connections, tries on more hats, slips into more pairs of shoes, eavesdrops on more conversations, reads more minds, and hears more voices than the rest of us. And what a lucky break for us that he’s had a pen laying around to document, describe, and share so many of them.

Tim Butler

Saturday
December 19

The cover of Tim Butler’s latest album showcases a fun personality with its comic book artwork. One listen to the album and it is evident that this is a serious songwriter growing into his craft.
With this album, Tim wanted to highlight the pop flair in his songs. He found an interesting a partner – his longtime friend and pop-songsmith, Cliff Hillis. The result is Tim’s most mature recording to date, That’s The Way You Want Me to Be.

“It’s a bit more mature than my last record, but it still has the general lightness of my songwriting.  This record reflects me a lot more.”
What appeals to many of his fans is his easy-going manner. They have enjoyed his energetic performances and the conversational nature of his songs. "I love to perform and be interactive. Many of my shows have a conversational feel to them, and I love talking and joking with the audience," says Tim of his onstage persona.

In the end, however, Tim is just trying to be himself.

Lucas Joseph Collective

Sunday
December 20

Classified as a "higher standard of rock and roll," Lucas Joseph Collective's first CD release entitled "All Directions" explores various aspects of music in each song. It all began with singer/songwriter/guitarist Lucas Joseph (Ballasy) performing solo acoustic sets at local venues, and then later coming together with childhood friend/drummer Kyle DeLash. After sailing through a tedious audition round of America’s Got Talent in New York City last year (in an episode that was never televised), judge Sharon Osborne described Ballasy, also a 2008 two-time Apollo Theater winner, as an interesting combination of Bob Dylan and Stevie Wonder.

It is exactly this merging of folk and soul that, combined with his gravelly crooning, makes Ballasy’s tunes so unique. A long-time favorite throughout Doylestown, Ballasy always generates a great crowd, initially creating a following with DeLash at area coffee houses. It is a combination of Ballasy’s strong emotional energy, memorable stage presence and catchy tunes that keep people asking for more. Often compared to Jamie Cullum, the Fray, Bob Dylan and John Mayer, Lucas Joseph Collective’s brand of alternative rock appeals to all ages.

"New Year's Eve Party"

"Patio Dance Party"

with The Buicks

Thursday
December 31

"New Year's Eve Party" with Sharon Little
At the start of 2008, Sharon Little was working as a waitress. Less than five months later, she is appearing in concert halls throughout the country as the opening act on the Robert Plant/Alison Krauss and T Bone Burnett “Raising Sand” tour. She’s winning ovations as Perfect Time For A Breakdown, her brilliant album of heartfelt personal songs, is released nationally. While this might seem that she’s an “overnight sensation,” Sharon is anything but a flash in the pan. She’s a singer of intense emotional honesty and the songs she’s written reveal an old soul that just happens to be within a person possessed of undeniable physical and spiritual beauty. The journey that has taken her so far in seemingly so short a time has actually been a life-long quest to find her voice, both in the literal and figurative sense.

It’s only a matter of time before the rest of the world catches on to what the tour audiences are learning first-hand: Sharon Little is a unique voice in a crowded landscape and she’s here to stay.

Folklore

Dan Vosk

Friday
January 29

Folklore
Folklore is Jimmy Hughes and lots of his friends from Athens GA and Philadelphia PA, the two towns that Hughes calls home. A veteran to the Athens music scene where he plays with the likes of Elf Power and Vic Chesnutt, Hughes took the songwriter role when he formed Folklore in 2007 to create the conceptual album, The Ghost of H.W. Beaverman. A grandiose tale, the songs sounds like they’ve appeared off different records initially but the fog will clear and you’ll find yourself traversing through the story many times over.

The bonus of course is that there are splendid melodies to be found on every corner, with emphasis on clarinets, strings, trumpet, digeridoo, and more forming the backdrop to songs that have been called poignant, provocative, heartbreaking, and haunting. 2008 brought the darker, more psychedelic follow-up album, Carpenter’s Falls, and the band has plans for a third in early 2010, called Home Church Road, which is said to tell the epic tale of the last remaining species on Earth after human-extinction.

Dan Vosk
New Jersey native Dan Vosk has been playing guitar and writing music for years. A recent graduate of Berklee College of Music in Boston, Dan has really been able to explore his abilities and take his music down many different avenues. Nevertheless, Dan’s music still stays true to his rock and alternative roots. As of late, the player and songwriter had the pleasure of connecting with some old friends to arrange his songs in a new way.

The BlackTails

Saturday
January 30

It's a chemical reaction: Cary's dynamic onstage presence explodes in contact with the internationally renowned musicianship of The BlackTails. Expect laughter, tears and the urge to get on your feet (or the table) to move with the groove. An evening that alternates between stadium size sound and songs that will draw you in like a whisper. There will be new music from Cary, as well as the first public performance of The BlackTails newly released album, "Inside Man", and of course, dynamic collaborations between the two groups.

Imagine what a marriage of the two might bring...

Meghan Cary

Meghan Cary’s music has drawn comparisons to Shawn Colvin, Stevie Nicks, Blind Faith and even Bruce Springsteen. An award-winning songwriter and a natural on stage, Cary was named Billboard Magazine’s Critic’s Choice for Best Newcomer when she hit the music scene.

A professional television and stage actress, Cary brings more than great music to the stage. She creates an intimate theatrical experience that brings her audience along on a rewarding emotional ride. "You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll beg for more!" (News and Observer).

The Blacktails
"Stevie Ray Vaughan meets Santana, watching Pulp Fiction..." (AngelBear Records). With musical influences drawn from American Roots Music to West Coast Swing, Gypsy Jazz, Latin, Surf Rock & Electric Blues, The BlackTails have been inspiring audiences with their high energy live show since their 2004 launch in NYC. Playing to sold out audiences at the world famous Iridium in NYC to rocking music festival stages across the country, The BlackTails have drawn a diverse following around the world from the U.S. to Europe, South America and Asia.

ThreadBare Youth

Sunday
January 31

ThreadBare Youth is a band from Philadelphia. With strong backgrounds in jazz, rock as well as punk, The Youth have developed a sound all their own, giving nods to rockers and folkies alike. Their live shows prove to be a jumble of spontaneously outrageous humor and well as spine- tingling hooks that everyone can groove to. All of their music is written together and they like to share responsibilites within the band.

GABE ROSEN- Gabe drumming is a raw, raging force.

SAM BOLES- Boles is the closest thing anyone will ever find to a human clam. His long fingered, loopy bass style is the perfect complimentary element to the band's swinging grooves and rock solid arrangements.

ANDREW MIGLIORE- Andrew is the bands primary instrumentalist, he can weasel his way around several instruments, Piano, Guitar and Cello.

SAM MERCURIO- Merc is the lead singer and lyricist of the group and takes on lead Guitar duties.
